V. Personal Injury Protection Coverage (a.k.a. P.I.P. Coverage):
This is no-fault coverage and covers you and, in many cases, anyone else injured in your car, regardless of fault. Basic P.I.P. coverage in Florida is $10,000,00, and this coverage is required by law. Buy more if you can afford it. This pays 80% of an insured’s medical expenses and/or 60% of lost wages, as well as reimbursement for mileage for your injury-related trips. Your medical payments coverage (discussed below) would pick up the other 20% of your medical bills not paid by P.I.P. so long as your bills are within the coverage amounts. There are literally dozens of options available for P.I.P. coverage. Unless you are extremely knowledgeable about your other health insurance and how it integrates with motor vehicle insurance, or, unless neither you nor any member of your family has earned income, we would suggest you buy as much standard, non-deductible P.I.P. coverage as you can afford, and steer clear of the deductibles. The circumstances under which P.I.P. is applicable and how it truly operates is beyond the scope of this memorandum. P.I.P. coverage is required by law (Florida Statute §627.736).
