Expect the unexpected in construction zones

Driving through a construction zone is second nature to most people, but that doesn't mean you should let your guard down and just go through the motions. It's critical to expect the unexpected, as doing so positions you to better deal with anything that comes your way.

Here are three steps you can take to ensure that you're ready for everything, even the most dangerous of situations:

  • Slow down: The slower you're driving, the more time you have to make adjustments in the event of an emergency. Make note of the speed limit in the construction zone and don't exceed it until you're told that it's okay to do so.
  • Let the flaggers guide you: Since you don't know what to expect, lean on the flaggers to provide guidance. For example, they'll let you know if you should slow down, change lanes or follow some other type of regulation.
  • Remain patient: Even if you're in a hurry, rushing through a construction zone is never a good idea. Not only does it increase the risk of an accident, but it could also result in a traffic citation, which can cost you big bucks.

Even if you prepare for everything as you enter a construction zone in your vehicle, something could still go wrong. Another driver could change lanes when they're not supposed to. A construction worker could drop a load in front of your vehicle.

If you're injured in a construction zone accident, move to the side of the road when possible and call 911. After you receive treatment, request a copy of the police report, collect evidence backing up your claim and take the steps necessary to obtain compensation from the negligent party.
